Just my thoughts and reflections about living and loving in the post-post modern age.

Are men becoming women (July 21, 2010)

I had an interesting conversation with a male friend the other day. He is convinced that men are a dying breed. Ha! I scoffed.
However, at least one scientist seems to agree with him.
This scientist person, a Professor Jennifer Graves, (no pun intended, I’m sure) a genetic expert from the University of Canberra, seems to think that the essential ingredient needed to make a boy a boy, the Y chromosome is disappearing.
My friend seems to think he is noticing this change in his very life-time. Men are becoming more female and women are becoming more like men, says he.
He mentioned how different he is from his father as proof. When he was a boy, he was taught that to be a man meant you had to hide your emotions, to ‘suck it up’ one might say. You had to be strong and ‘tough’, you had to be in control and the absolute master of your domain.
Nowadays men are a lot more in touch with their ‘feminine’ sides, supposedly, and this apparently equals disaster for the male gender!
However, the report also says that it will take another 5 million years for the Y chromosome to totally die out, so that’s another 5 million years of men being men to contend with… phew!
Not sure what will happen or what we will be left with once this happens, and I for one cannot imagine what a world without men would be like.
I mean, don’t get me wrong, I love my girlfriends, but when it comes to sex and romance there is nothing like a real man to make you glad you were born a woman.
A world full of just women? Inconceivable! What would we have to talk about? All our analytical skills would fade away because we’d have no cryptic text messages to decipher, no blow by blow, point by point disection of what he really meant by, “So I guess I’ll see ya soon.”
Well, if men are becoming women I for one can’t see the evidence. Yes, some gen Y men are becoming more sensitive and more able to express their feelings, slightly better than the previous generation. And yes, some men do spend a lot more time putting an outfit together these days then I have ever done. And yes, some men today actually think it’s o.k. to dance to Lady GaGa and La Roux.
But that’s still a long way to go before you can call yourself a woman, because last time I checked, only women bleed!
So men relax, dance to Lady GaGa, match your belt with your shoes and scarf to your hearts content, and enjoy what’s left of your Y chromosomes… while you still can!
